Question: Would a DEFINED PERIMETER (DPC)mattress be considered a restraint device?
Answer:
CMS RAI Chapter 3 pg. 198-202 The manual defines a physical restraint as a manual method or physical device, material, or equipment attached to the resident’s body that the individual cannot remove easily or restricts movement or normal access to individual’s body. In order to be considered a restraint, it must prevent the individual from doing something they can normally do. Since the individual is able to enter and exit the bed as normal, a DPC type of product cannot qualify as a restraint.
